I probably could have gotten out of there for closer to $10 and not gone hungry. There was seating for four inside, just next to the sliding door, along with a table and chairs and a comfy lounge chair of sorts on the balcony. Hairdryers and a small selection of toiletries are provided, including shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and body moisturizer. All but entry-level King or Two Queens Rooms have separate soaking tubs, and top-tier Panoramic Balcony Suites have plunge pools on the balcony. Both properties are very much right in the action, though, so you could easily walk to restaurants, bars, clubs, etc. Housed in an angular sand-colored building with stone and wood accents and a simple glass entrance, Thompson Beach House looks modern and sleek already from the outside. The property is compact but appealing and inviting, with just about the right amount of designer touches to feel upscale yet laid-back. Although there’s a couch and a table with a couple of chairs, the lobby is the place where guests wait to be checked in rather than hang out with a drink.

With just three floors and 27 rooms, you can avoid the tourist crunch and overbearing salespeople that are all too common at large resorts. Thompson Beach House, built in 2016, is a chic little Bohemian getaway and an extension of Thompson Playa del Carmen hotel, located a couple blocks away. You could almost throw a stone into the water from the balcony of your ocean-view room—it’s that close. Private daybeds, cabanas and an oceanfront lounge are exclusively for Beach House guests. Bicycles, yoga, paddleboards and other water sports are also available on site. C Grill and Lounge is an excellent alfresco restaurant serving up wood-fire grilled seafood plus Mexican bites and ceviche, all made with local ingredients.

Please inform Thompson Playa Del Carmen Beach House, by Hyatt of your expected arrival time in advance. Very modern, clean, peaceful, in front of the beach, in downtown near everything. We loved the spacious room, terrace, and calm of the space. It is far enough away from the very clubby section a few blocks away, and insulated from that noise.
There are several loungers around it as well as a few cabanas with ceiling fans, sofas, and food and drink service. There is some music during the day but it’s generally not too loud. With only 27 guestrooms and suites, Thompson Beach House offers highly personalized, intuitive service and private check-in. For my entree, I was eyeing the whole catch of the day, which was described as "golden fish" with a pastor marinade. At $50, that was out of my solo-diner budget, though, so the waiter offered to do a filet prepared in the same style, instead. At $17, it wasn't cheap, considering the prices at local restaurants, but, boy, was it delicious.
Hyatt wasn't able to shed much light on the situation, only confirming that the Thompson Beach House and its sister Main House would not be participating in World of Hyatt. You're not entirely out of luck, though — there's a phenomenal Grand Hyatt just up the road, which I actually preferred to Thompson's pricey beach pad (stay tuned for that review!). Ferries to Cozumel dock at Muelle Playa del Carmen, which is a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Xcaret, a famous theme and natural park, can be found about a 15-minute drive away. The beautiful Tulum ruins are about an hour away by car, as is the nearest international airport, in Cancun. I pulled up the Hotels.com booking on my phone, but the clerk wasn't impressed. If you're planning to swim, note that there was a ton of seaweed in this area of the beach when I went. It didn't seem to be an issue for hotels a bit farther north, though, on the other side of the ferry pier. At $307 for a base room, the Thompson Beach House is one of the priciest hotels in Riviera Maya — at least among those who don't fall under the all-inclusive category, with bundled food, drinks and activities.
So I emailed instead, but when I didn't receive a response within 24 hours, I called the reservations line and had the agent cancel my stay entirely.
